This past week has been a powerful testament to what we can achieve when we move beyond organisational silos and embrace a truly regional, community-led approach to death, dying, and bereavement. As we marked Dying Matters Week across Northern Ireland, the events in Belfast and Coleraine highlighted a growing network of care that spans our geography and our diverse sectors.
Strengthening Regional Partnerships
Our relaunch at Belfast Central Library was not just a single event, but a reflection of a deep-rooted partnership between Libraries NI, Compassionate Communities NI, and Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. By working together, we are ensuring that high-quality death literacy resources are available in the heart of our communities.

Scaling Community Impact
A regional approach means ensuring that no community is left behind.
Partnering with the Northern Trust to launch a Death Positive Library in Coleraine Library demonstrates our commitment to a scalable model. We are creating "compassionate hubs" in every local library - spaces where the silence around mortality is replaced by professional guidance and shared community stories.
Whether in a major city or a market town, the goal remains the same: making death literacy a standard part of community health.
The Good Grief Club and Understanding Bereavement
Our regional vision includes dedicated spaces for both our caregivers and the citizens we serve.
The Good Grief Club: This initiative serves as a vital bridge, using light humour it encourages us to open the conversation. It fosters a sense of belonging and allows for the sharing of experiences in a supportive environment, which can break the isolation that often accompanies loss.
Understanding Bereavement Workshop: Facilitated by Cruse Bereavement Support, this workshop provided a deep dive into the emotional landscape of grief. It offered practical tools and insights for attendees to better understand their own journeys or support others through theirs.
Empowering Choices
In partnership with Money Guiders Network NI, we also hosted an online workshop to ensure our regional reach extended to those who could not join us in person. This digital engagement is a cornerstone of our partnership strategy, removing geographical barriers to essential information.
This event was designed to empower individuals with the practical knowledge needed for advance care planning, ensuring that financial and personal choices are respected and supported.
Moving Forward Together
As we shared tea and networking opportunities, it was clear that compassionate communities are built through regional strategies, local partnerships, and a shared belief that death and bereavement are a whole-community responsibility. Together, we are building a region where every individual feels supported, informed, and connected when facing life's most difficult moments.
